Browsing

Making it to a high position on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) can make a business skyrocket without spending a single dollar on ads.

Just to give you an idea, the #1 result on Google gets 27.6% of all clicks, with numbers two and three getting 15.8 and 11%, respectively.

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, is the conjunction of techniques we use to make that happen.

In this post, we’ll share with you five quick tips to optimise your site for SEO.

Don’t worry, we won’t go very deep. Instead, we’ll give you strategies that you can start implementing right away without any external help.

5 Tips to Improve Your Site’s SEO

Tip #1: Increase your site’s loading speed

Your site’s performance is one of the key things that search engines consider to decide where to rank it.

In addition, slow loading makes people leave your site sooner, increasing your bounce rate (the percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page).

Too many people leaving your site fast signals that you’re not providing valuable content, which also affects your ranking.

To find out if your site is loading fast enough, you can paste its link into Googe PageSpeed Insight Test. It’ll tell you how fast it loads under different circumstances, whether that’s good or bad, and give you some tips on how to improve it.

The easiest way to make your site load faster is by optimising images on your website (discussed further below). Other methods include upgrading your hosting plan, getting rid of unnecessary plugins, and avoiding bloated coding.

Tip #2: Add links to your content

Search engines like sites that direct their visitors to more relevant content throughout the web. This can be through internal links (directing to other pages within your site) or external ones (directing to other sites).

While there’s no exact number, many experts recommend adding one internal link and 1-2 external ones per every 500 words of content.

When creating content, browse through the web and your own site to find pages that could add more value to your readers or back up your claims with data from reputable sources.

If you have a post about Google Advertising, it could be helpful to add a link to an article that covers Google Analytics.

If you’re citing statistics or studies, linking to the original sources will increase your credibility.

Just remember to stick with links that are actually relevant to your content.

Tip #3: Optimise your site with keywords

SEO Copywriting involves optimising your content with the keywords you wish to rank for, and it’s probably the most important thing when it comes to SEO marketing.

Always pick keywords that have a combination of high search volume and low competition levels. You can easily get that information with a keyword research tool like Semrush.

Then, add them throughout your content. Ideally, they should make up for between 1 and 2.5% of all words. Adding more than that will not only harm your visitors’ experience but may also lead search engines to rank you lower due to what we call keyword stuffing.

Finally, don’t forget to add your keywords and phrases to your pages’ URLs and page titles. That’s what tells Google and potential visitors what each page is about.

Tip #4: Optimise images

To optimise images for SEO, start by saving them with descriptive names on their files (separated with hyphens) that make sense both to humans and search engines.

If your image shows red walking shoes, saving it as red-walking-shoes will give it more SEO power than just naming it shoes.

Also, add those descriptions to your images’ alt texts (separated with spaces) and add your focus keyword in the alt text of at least one of your images.

Those two things will help Google understand what your image is about and increase its rank on Google Images.

Finally, avoid large images as they slow down your site. As a rule of thumb, don’t use images wider than 1,000 pixels. If they’re wider, you can always compress them on an app like Paint.

Tip #5: Make it mobile-friendly

As of August 2022, more than 60% of all website traffic comes from mobile devices. Google knows this and values sites that offer a good experience on those devices.

When creating your site, make sure you choose a mobile-responsive template.

Then, preview what it’ll look like on mobile devices. Most CMSs will ensure your site is responsive and allow you to preview what it’ll look like on smartphones and tablets.

Finally, you can test it with Google’s Mobile-Friendly tool:

Conclusion

Those are easy and actionable tips that you can implement yourself right away. You’ll need to keep track of whether your efforts are working by regularly checking how your website is performing. Knowing the right Google Analytics parameters to use will surely help you identify where you need to improve.

However, SEO goes a long way. You’ll need advanced on-page, off-page, and technical SEO strategies to make it to the top positions with the most valuable keywords.

If you believe your company is at the right stage to invest in that, your might consider hiring an agency with a specialist SEO team.
